Classic VS Mineral Sunscreen

Active Heroes

Classic sunscreen filters work like synthetic, hidden defenders combating UV rays from within your skin.

Mineral sunscreens act more like bodyguards, forming a protective layer to reflect sunlight away.

Protection Style

They absorb the sun's rays like sponges, transforming them into harmless heat, which is then released from the skin.

They sit on the surface and reflect UV rays away. This action is defensive, creating a physical barrier that UV rays cannot penetrate.

Start Time

Needs about 20 minutes to warm up before going into action.

Ready for action right away – no waiting needed! Feels like wearing gentle armor, sometimes visible.

Best For

All skin types and tones. Great for sports, sweating and swimming.

Best for sensitive skin: Mineral sunscreens tend to benefit some skin conditions because they sit on the skin's surface rather than being absorbed.

Did You Know?

We're leading the way in eco-friendly beauty with our special Bag-on-Valve (BOV) packaging.

Why?

With BOV we leave no product behind. 100% Utilization.

No harmful propellant gas. L-UV is propelled by air. Eco-friendly choice.

FAQ

Classic Sunscreen vs. Mineral Sunscreen. What is the difference?

Non-mineral, often referred to as "synthetic," sunscreens use non-physical active ingredients like Homosalate, Octocrylene, Octisalate, and Avobenzone. These ingredients work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, which is then released from the skin. Synthetic sunscreen absorbs approximately 95% or more of UV rays.

Mineral sunscreen uses physical active ingredients such as Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide. These ingredients create a protective barrier on the skin that blocks UV rays by absorbing and reflecting them away from the skin. Mineral sunscreen absorbs approximately 90% or more of UV rays and reflects around 5% or more.

Both types aim to create a protective barrier on the skin's surface, but they achieve this through different mechanisms. Mineral sunscreen forms a visible barrier, while non-mineral sunscreen forms an invisible barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays away from the body.

What does it mean for a mineral sunscreen to be non-nano?

When we talk about nano and non-nano particles, we're referring to the size of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, the two physical sun filters used in mineral sunscreens.

Non-nano particles (larger than 100 nanometers) of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are considered safe for reefs and marine life. On the other hand, nano zinc oxide particles are tiny enough to be ingested by marine animals, including coral, causing internal damage. Plus, for humans, nano particles can potentially be absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream.

Can you break down what Broad Spectrum means and tell me about UVA versus UVB protection?

Broad Spectrum refers to protection against both UVA and UVB sun rays. UVA rays penetrate deeply into the skin, contributing to issues like dark spots, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and wrinkles. They can even pass through window glass. On the other hand, UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn.

Why don’t you say “Reef Friendly” or “Reef Safe” on your products?

We refrain from using the terms "Reef Safe" or "Reef Friendly" on our products because these terms are not standardized or regulated by the FDA. The lack of consistent definitions and regulations across different municipalities has led to consumer confusion. To provide clarity, we label our products as "Hawaii Act 104 Reef Compliant," indicating that they do not contain Oxybenzone or Octinoxate. We're proud to confirm that all our formulas adhere to this standard.

Do your spray products contain aerosol?

No, there's no use of chemical propellants in our sprays! Instead, our spray bottles use a pressurized can system powered by compressed air inside the bottle. This air is what dispenses the product stored in a B.O.V (Bag on Valve) within the container, replacing the old-school aerosol methods.
